DIY Ideas For Custom Cabinets

It’s a fact. Women love clothes. I believe it’s because of the orientation we had when we were growing up. Long before the popularity of Barbie dolls worldwide, I was a paper dolls’ fanatic. I had a vast collection of it, from the little girl Sketchy down to the Barbie paper doll version. It was the kind of toy that stirred a little girl’s imagination in the world of make-believe. I remember creating a story out of those dolls as though they were going to a party and engaging them in a real conversation. When I was in my adolescent years, I would try to fit into my older sister’s dresses with shoes to match. Of course, they were too loose for me but I liked the thrill of dressing up and walking around the room like fashion models would. In my early twenties, I wanted to have my own closet. And so I did.

There was an extra room in my family home since my older sisters have gotten married. So, I converted that room into my own closet. I didn’t have to hire someone to have a custom cabinet built for me. It was not necessary. I decided to use my creativity by doing it myself.

How did I start?

Cleaning the room
The room had 3 cabinets, designed for each of us. I took out all of the old stuff and placed them in boxes.

Planning for the DIY custom cabinet
Since there were 3 cabinets, I decided to have cabinet A for my clothes, cabinet B for my shoes and cabinet c for my bags.

Fixing the cabinets
I painted the interiors of the cabinets with a light color to make it look brighter and wider. Alternatively, you can opt for wallpapers. Choose a design that will accentuate your belongings. For Cabinet B, I removed the clothing rod to give place for the shoe shelves. There were 2 drawers in that cabinet. I used them for my socks and workout gear. As for cabinet C, the same process with B. The drawers here was for my purses and wallets. I proceeded in removing the cabinet doors with a little help from a carpenter.

Organizing your cabinet
I had plenty of hangers but they were in different colors. I purchased just one color for all of my clothes to make them look neat and clean. I discarded my old clothing and kept the ones that sparked joy. Isn’t that familiar? That is the KonMari method of organizing your things from the book authored by Marie Kondo of Japan. I must say, it definitely works!

Accessorizing your closet
I Invested in a standing mirror and placed it just beside the cabinets. I added lights to give me a good reflection in the mirror and soft carpet underneath my feet. Finally, I placed a couch with pillows so that I can sit on it while trying on my shoes.

Voila! I now have my own custom cabinet that was created out of an empty room. If you have yours, try to do the same as mine. You will love it!
