Remodeling My Home With Custom Cabinets

I grew up with books and cakes around me. My father was a wide reader while my mom was a baking enthusiast which makes me a product of both worlds. I love to read and write as well as cook and bake. In our ancestral home, my dad has his office filled up with different kinds of books – medical books since he was a doctor, agriculture since he was into farming, reader’s digest, novels that are mostly detective stories, and a lot more. Meanwhile, my mom had a collection of recipes from magazines and newspaper clippings and cookbooks. The scenario at home was like this. My dad was behind his desk and my mom in the kitchen.

I have a vivid memory of how the cabinets were back then. The bookshelves were a sight to see with books placed side by side from top to bottom. The kitchen cabinets were cramped with my mom’s measuring spoons and cups, and all of her baking and cooking stuff including the 67-year-old mixer that my parents had as a wedding gift. Even if my parents are gone, the cabinets looked the same ‘till now. Since I inherited the house, I would want a few changes to keep things organized through custom cabinets. I’m sure my parents would have wanted the same.

How and where do I start?

The office
The area here was a bit small. My plan is to paint the walls with a lighter color to give the illusion of a bigger space. I will also have the other cabinets removed and focus on just one side of the room where the bookshelves will be placed. I will have my built-in office desk down at the center of these bookshelves. On the other side of the room, custom cabinets in the form of a bookcase with a seat will be placed at both corners. At the center of that wall is a couch with soft pillows. I would want my dad’s collection of shells displayed all over the office, probably, inserted in between the books. The office will have soft reading lights as well.

The kitchen
The kitchen has naturally lovely wood, and I don’t want to touch that. I just want to enhance the materials that were used and add a little more of the country into it. I will have built-in custom cabinets and drawers for the pantry and especially, for the baking stuff.  As much as possible, I want it all confined to one area so that I won’t have to go around the kitchen searching for a particular item; saves me a lot of time. I would want my mom’s cookbooks and recipes in a wall cabinet, too. The door of that cabinet will have a table of measurements or converter chart to avoid having to surf the internet every time I need to bake something and I don’t know how many cups are there in a quart, or words to that effect. My mom’s 67-year-old mixer will have its special place in a custom cabinet with a stand mixer lift just beneath the wall cabinet. Beside that will be the built-in oven and microwave. Below the sink will be the built-in trash bin. At the center of the kitchen is the working table. The other stuff will also have its designated places.

The kitchen is a bit complicated than the office as it holds more stuff. This will require detailed work, but I’m willing to go through all of that to achieve my dream kitchen.

If you have an old house, don’t give up on it that easily. Instead, remodel it into the kind of home that you would want for your family. Consider yourself lucky for having a home that held so many good memories and will continue to build good memories in the coming years.
