Tips On Custom Cabinet Making

House renovation is an exciting project. You have the opportunity to choose the theme for your home. If you like a more defined look with less frills, then minimalism is for you. If you want a feel of the old times with a hint of nostalgia, then mid-century is for you. The list goes on and on. Apart from the theme, you also need to consider the color combination, walls, flooring, and cabinets. Everything should blend well with each other to get the look that you desire of.

Think of your budget. Would you go for stock or the custom cabinets? Stocks are cheaper, but it may not go well with your theme, whereas custom cabinets, though pricey, are made according to your design.  So, given the situation, here are some points to consider when choosing custom cabinets.

  • Cost. Having a cabinet made out of the exact design and measurement that you have provided is expensive. You have to give the cabinet maker  the usual specifications of a cabinet such as:
    • kind of wood (mahogany, oak, maple, hickory, cherry, birch, ash, and pine)
    • number of drawers and doors
    • the finish (natural, painted or stained)
    • the divisions in your cabinet (shelves, dovetail drawers, knife block)

You are paying for the skill, materials used and the exclusivity of the project. There is no fixed price with custom cabinets. It would all depend on what you and the cabinet maker have agreed on after discussing the specifics with them.

  • Quality. Ensure the durability of the kind of materials used for your custom cabinets. Can the cabinet maker follow the design and provide the quality that you would like for your cabinets?
  • The availability of the production materials. Does the cabinet maker have the materials that you want for your cabinets? If not, are you willing to discuss other options?
  • Time frame. How long will it take for the custom cabinets to finish? You need to have an agreement with the cabinet maker especially when you have a target date for your house renovation.
  • Design. You talked about the design with the cabinet maker and yet, the finished product came out different. Sometimes, this scenario happens and you end up very disappointed.

Lastly, will it meet your expectations? Well, custom cabinets are worth the try, especially when you go to the right cabinet maker whose workmanship has been tried and tested over the years. Hence, everything that you have dreamt of in a home lies under the hands of the entire renovation team.
