Who is Behind Cabinetry?

Cabinetry is the collective name for cabinets. The person responsible for building the cabinets is the cabinet maker. Decades ago, cabinet makers go through the entire process of cabinet making by hand. Today, modernity invaded the world of cabinetry. This may be due to the fact that consumers are highly educated with the newest trend in the market. People now go for appliance integration where a seamless look is achieved. This development coupled with the birth of more fashionable cabinet ideas has paved the way for cabinet making companies to improve their facilities and provide for the increasing demands of the consumers. In addition, cabinet makers should also possess the following qualifications:

  • High school diploma or its equivalent,  General Educational Development (GED)
  • Vocational and Trade School Certification
  • Math and spatial skills
  • Knowledge of power tools and equipment
  • Knowledge in Principles of Design
  • Should have a keen eye for detail
  • Should have a creative mind
  • Physically strong

Having a certificate is not necessarily a requirement but rather, a plus factor. Although, you will go through a series of on- the-job training programs, companies with modern equipment would usually prefer cabinet makers that are technically prepared. The Bureau Labor of Statistics has indicated that it takes at least 3 years in minimum to acquire the skill in craftsmanship. When you have reached that level, you become a highly valued prospect of well renowned cabinetry businesses that will offer you varied opportunities for a better compensation.
Moreover, you need to be good in numbers because from time to time, you have to calculate the measurement of the wood according to the specifics of the ordered cabinetry. One mistake will lead to a failed symmetry of the entire cabinet and you have to do the whole process all over again.
Lastly, you have to know the basics of modern craftsmanship. This will enable you to easily understand and adapt to the trainings you will undergo from your superiors.

Tasks of a cabinet-maker:

  • Client consultations
  • Make an agreement with the client re the measurement, design of the cabinet and the other specifications.
  • Make a drawing of the agreed cabinet
  • Putting together the cabinet
  • Installing the cabinet

So, if you are passionate about making cabinets and you have some of the skills of these famous cabinet makers, Thomas Chippendale, George Hepplewhite and Thomas Sheraton, then most likely, you will qualify and succeed.
